Embroidery Designs and Styles

Embroidery designs can be used to decorate anything from pillowcases to eyeglass cases to t-shirts. By sewing different designs onto the materials, they become a work of art. There are so many designs to select from for changing the appearance of many things. There are many different ways to add embroidered items to life. It can be added to clothing, sheets and pillows, and towels as well as artwork throughout the home.

Use embroidery to trim or border the cuffs or collar of shirts or the pants. Add the designs to change the ordinary shirt or pants into a work of art. Use smaller designs on the lapel of a shirt to make the perfect holiday shirt embellished with little green trees, fat Santa, or scary black cats.

On the pants, sew designs on the cuff, leg seams, or pockets. Add different colors and make the pants stand out in a crowd with the beautiful colors everyone will notice. Add a floral design on the cuffs and up the seam to create a modern look of a trellis with the embroidery.

Some of the styles include blackwork, canvas painted projects, Hapsburg lace, Mountmelluck, fine white work, gold work and modern Jabobean work.

Blackwork is a hand embroidery technique where a pattern is counted onto the fabric filling the design with black thread to create different appearance of the depths of the design. The effect of this design style creates a modern but dignified pattern resembling charcoal or pencil drawings.

Canvas paint kits are custom kits based on the personal drawings. The template is transferred onto the canvas so the design can be painted creating embroidery looking painting. This has become a popular form of using the beauty of embroidery.

Hapsburg lace is a form of European embroidery. Mountmelluck is a form of embroidery from Ireland. Modern Jacobean is hand embroidery used to produce dragonflies, birds of paradise, and unicorns. All are very beautiful forms of embroidery and very labor intensive.
